Jobs: Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Experimental Petrology

Two post-doc positions are available for a project dealing with the accretion and differentiation of the Earth. The scope of the project is broad and the exact direction of each individual PDRA’s research will be decided by agreement between the successful candidates and Bernie Wood. The posts are funded by the European Research Council.

Requirements:

You must have a PhD in Earth Sciences or a related discipline and experience of high pressure methods (piston-cylinder and/or multi-anvil) and microanalytical techniques (electron microprobe and/or LA-ICPMS). Knowledge of Laser Ablation ICP-MS analysis and the application of thermodynamic calculations to geochemical and petrological problems is desirable.

 You will perform experiments and microanalysis of experimental products under the direction of B. J. Wood. You are also expected to contribute to the writing of scientific manuscripts describing the results of the research.

 The successful applicants will have an option to engage in teaching.  This may include lectures and small-group teaching of undergraduates and graduate students.  There is also scope for a PDRA to supervise Masters projects.

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN GEMOLOGY

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) invites applications for R.T. Liddicoat Postdoctoral Research Associate positions at its New York, NY, and Carlsbad, CA locations to conduct research into fundamental scientific problems related to gemology, involving diamonds, colored stones, pearls, and instrument development. The specific focus of the research will depend on the applicant’s interests, expertise, and the needs of GIA research and the laboratory.

GIA, an independent nonprofit organization established in 1931, is recognized as the world’s foremost authority in gemology. GIA invented the famous 4Cs of Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat Weight in the early 1950s and in 1953, created the International Diamond Grading System™ which, today, is recognized by virtually every professional jeweler in the world. Through research, education, gemological laboratory services, and instrument development, the Institute is dedicated to ensuring the public trust in gems and jewelry by upholding the highest standards of integrity, academics, science, and professionalism.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field, preferably obtained within the last three years. Abilities to effectively communicate in English with scientific and production staff, prepare written scientific articles for publication, and a willingness to travel domestically or internationally as needed are strongly desired. GIA will fully fund one year of full-time employment including benefits. Potential for a second year is available upon satisfactory progress. Evaluation of applicants will commence immediately and continue until positions are filled. Starting date is negotiable.

GIA Laboratory is fully equipped with all types of spectrometers, chemical analysis, X-ray imaging systems, and has access to other research facilities. DRT 2013 - Leuven, Belgium - GRANTS & EXTENDED DEADLINE

A two-day field trip to the Ardenne-Eifel region (Germany, Belgium) will be organized, leaving Leuven on the evening of Wednesday 18 September 2013 and returning to Leuven on the evening of Friday 20 September 2013. Please note that the number of participants is limited. Participation will be reserved on a first-come first served basis.
